The soundbar experience continues to evolve and that is not a bad thing. Very few consumers can afford something like the Theory Audio Design 5.2.2 Soundbar System that we reviewed in 2022, but it’s important to have a benchmark and long-term goal when it comes to performance. When it comes to affordable Dolby Atmos wireless soundbar systems, the folks at Platin Audio have been hard at work on something unique that is finally available.
Let’s take a look.
Platin Audio, makers of wireless home theater audio systems using WiSA technology, has announced it is incorporating WiSA technology into its first soundbar system, the Platin Milan 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos Soundbar for $799.
Tip: The Platin Audio Milan 5.1.4 system was first displayed at the 2023 CEDIA Expo.
Platin Milan 5.1.4 Features
Wireless Certification: WiSA DS (Discrete System). This technology delivers uncompressed, 16-bit audio at a sample rate of 48kHz. This standard applies to four channels of audio, for full-range speakers, and surround/height channels, as well as an additional .1 channel for the subwoofer.
Tech Note: The Platin Milan 5.1.4 uses WiSA DS chips. The WiSA DS chips are running WiSA E software. However, since the soundbar is the transmitter and not the TV (the soundbar connects to the TV via HDMI-eARC), the Platin is using the WiSA DS platform to transmit the audio wirelessly to the surround speakers and subwoofer.
Surround Sound Support: Dolby Atmos, Dolby Atmos Music
Soundbar Configuration
The Soundbar incorporates five channels:
- Three forward-firing front channels (left, center, right).
- Two upfiring front channels (left, right)
Rear surround speakers
- There are two wireless surround speakers (L, R). Each speaker incorporates one forward-firing rear channel and one upfiring (Height) rear channel.
Subwoofer
- A low-profile wireless subwoofer is included that supports flexible placement options, even under most furniture (provided it is the spot that supports good bass response).
Tip: Although the soundbar wirelessly transmits the subwoofer and surround channels using WiSA DS technology, each needs to be connected to AC power in order to operate as the subwoofer and surround speakers have their own built-in amplifier(s).
Connectivity
- 1 x HDMI ARC/eARC
- 1 x Digital Optical Input
- 1 x Digital COAX Input
- 1 x RCA Analog Aux Input (L/R)
- 1 x Analog (3.5mm)
- Bluetooth (version info not provided): This allows users to stream music from compatible smartphones and tablets to the soundbar system.
Set-up & Control
The soundbar connects to a Smart TV’s HDMI-ARC/eARC connection.
Plug the soundbar, rear surround speakers, and subwoofer into power outlets. Once on the soundbar will automatically detect their presence and send the designated audio channel information to them wirelessly.
Milan Soundbar App: After connections are made, the Milan Soundbar app for iOS and Android provides access to all settings and control functions.
Tip: Most TV remotes can also be used to turn the Milan Soundbar system on or off and the volume up or down.
